Lawrence Hill LFAS Arts Matter

The students and staff of Langley Fine Arts School were fortunate to have Lawrence Hill featuring in the “Arts Matter” series on October 9th 2015. A best-selling Canadian author, the Commonwealth Writers Prize award winner and Order of Canada recipient, recently released his latest novel, The Illegal, in 2015. Those at LFAS were grateful to host him and to have learned from his unique writing perspective and outlook on the arts.

He worked with students interested in writing and in the afternoon he held lectures school-wide. A second lecture was held that evening, open to the public where Hill discussed his books and writing and later answered  questions from the audience. This day won’t be soon forgotten, and neither will the influence he left on our school.

Congratulations to Lawrence Hill who was recently appointed to Canada’s Walk of Fame.

Evangeline Lilly Interview

The community of Langley Fine Arts was lucky to welcome Evangeline Lilly into their midst on January 15th. Lilly spent the entire day with the students in both drama and writing, passing along her knowledge of the arts and participating in two interviews about her budding career as an author.

Lilly’s book, The Squikerwonker’s, had its debut in the school’s Chief Sepass Theatre that evening. The audience was thrilled to hear Evangeline tell the story she was so passionate to share. Evangeline’s honest and hopeful approach to life as an artist inspired Charlotte Hunter, who was honoured to interview the star.

The second video, an introduction to Arts Matter featuring Evangeline Lilly, was created by film students Quin Voth and Ian Dejong and won first place in the BC Student Film Festival of 2015.

Grade 1 Harvest Celebration

Together with Mrs. Carnrite, Mrs. McCrae and Mrs. Miller’s grade 1 students have worked hard all season in the garden. They have planted potatoes, lettuce, rhubarb, strawberries, and dill. Recently, the food they planted was harvested. To celebrate their hard work, a feast was thrown. The raw fruits, vegetables, and herbs were made into  potato salad, strawberry rhubarb crumble, and caesar salad.

Grade 1 Goes Camping

Grade 1 LFAS teachers, Mrs. Miller and Mrs. McCrae, decided to organize a safe camping trip as a fun way to end the school year. Grade 1 students set up tents of all sizes and colours in their classrooms. Both teachers provided their students with camping songs, camping crafts, and hikes to the park. The students do all of their school work in the tents and take part in flashlight reading times. Mrs. Miller’s classroom has a tissue paper and stick campfire for the students to gather around for story time.
